ATR vs Normalized ATR
ATR measures average true range in the instrument’s price units. Normalized ATR divides ATR by price and expresses the result as a percentage. Use ATR when an order needs a concrete price distance; use Normalized ATR when comparing volatility across coins, price levels or long periods.

Use NATR to choose the market
Compare relative movement across the watchlist so nominal price does not decide which asset looks active. Apply minimum liquidity separately.

Use ATR to define price distance
Once the market is selected, translate the volatility regime into an actual stop or trailing distance with an ATR multiple appropriate to the timeframe.

Calculate position size from the stop
Divide the amount of capital you are willing to lose by the per-unit distance between entry and invalidation. The ATR is context; the structural invalidation remains the reason the trade is wrong.

Recheck after volatility changes
ATR and NATR are backward-looking averages. A scheduled event, liquidity shock or regime break can make the next range much larger than the recent estimate.
Common mistakes
- Calling the asset with the highest dollar ATR the most volatile asset in a multi-coin list.
- Placing a stop exactly one ATR away without checking nearby market structure.
- Treating NATR as a liquidity or slippage measure when it only normalizes range by price.
- Optimizing an ATR multiple separately for every coin until historical stops look perfect.
Questions
How is Normalized ATR calculated?+
Normalized ATR divides Average True Range by a price reference, commonly the current close, and multiplies by one hundred. The result describes recent average true range as a percentage of price, which makes magnitude easier to compare across instruments.
Should stops use ATR or NATR?+
An executable stop ultimately needs a price level, so ATR is the direct unit. NATR can help choose a comparable volatility multiple across assets before that conversion. In both cases, the stop should sit beyond a structural invalidation rather than at an arbitrary indicator distance alone.
Is a coin with high NATR always better for day trading?+
No. High relative movement creates opportunity but can also bring wider spreads, shallow depth, poor fills and unstable risk. A useful selection process combines NATR with liquidity, volume, venue quality and the strategy’s actual cost sensitivity.
Why does ATR rise when price rises?+
ATR is measured in absolute price units, so a similar percentage move becomes a larger dollar range as the instrument’s nominal price increases. That does not necessarily mean relative volatility increased, which is exactly the distortion Normalized ATR is designed to reduce.
