OBV vs CVD

OBV vs Cumulative Volume Delta

OBV assigns an entire candle’s volume positive or negative according to whether the close rose or fell. CVD sums aggressive buy volume minus aggressive sell volume from the trade tape. OBV works on ordinary OHLCV history; CVD needs taker-side data and answers the more specific question of who crossed the spread.

What changes in practice

QuestionOn Balance VolumeCumulative Volume DeltaDecision
Data requiredCandle close and total volume.Trades or candles containing reliable taker-buy and taker-sell volume.OBV is widely available; trustworthy CVD depends on richer exchange data.
Volume classificationAll bar volume follows the direction of the close versus the previous close. Each trade or aggregated taker volume follows the actual aggressor side.A green candle can still contain negative delta, which OBV cannot express.
Best useBroad participation trend over longer histories and markets without order-flow fields.Aggressive-flow confirmation, absorption and short-horizon divergence.Use the simplest data sufficient for the question.
Venue dependenceStill venue-specific because volume differs, but calculation is portable.Strongly venue-specific because aggressor flow can differ across books.Neither series is a universal total unless coverage explicitly aggregates venues.
Main failure modeTreating a tiny up-close as evidence every unit of volume was buying.Treating aggressive buying as guaranteed price appreciation despite passive absorption.Volume classification and price response must be read together.

A clean workflow

  1. 01

    Choose the available data honestly

Use OBV when only candles are dependable. Use CVD when the venue provides a trustworthy taker-side field or trade tape; do not manufacture precision from missing order-flow data.

  2. 02

Compare direction over a defined swing

Mark matching price pivots and compare whether the volume series confirms or diverges. A divergence without fixed pivot points is easy to invent after seeing the outcome.

  3. 03

    Read aggression against response

Rising CVD with stalled price can indicate aggressive buyers meeting passive supply. Falling CVD with stable price can indicate selling being absorbed. Delta matters because of what price did with it.

  4. 04

Keep the venue and session visible

Reset conventions and exchange coverage move cumulative lines. Compare like with like and avoid stitching separate venues into one conclusion without normalized data.

Common mistakes

  • Calling OBV true buying and selling volume when it only signs whole candles by close direction.
  • Treating CVD from one exchange as the complete crypto market’s aggressive flow.
  • Trading divergence without specifying pivots, session reset and invalidation before the outcome.
  • Assuming aggressive buyers must move price when large passive sellers can absorb them.

Questions

Why can price rise while CVD falls?+

Price can rise while aggressive sellers dominate if passive buyers absorb those sell orders and the available offer moves higher, or if activity on the measured venue differs from broader market leadership. The divergence is context to investigate, not automatic proof of manipulation or reversal.

Is OBV an order-flow indicator?+

OBV is volume-based but not trade-level order flow. It assigns the entire volume of a candle positive when the close rises and negative when the close falls. It cannot know which side initiated each trade or reveal bid-versus-ask activity inside the bar.

Which indicator has more history?+

OBV usually has much deeper history because it needs only standard OHLCV candles. Exact CVD depends on stored taker-side or trade data, which is heavier and often retained for a shorter period. Coverage should be checked before comparing a long OBV history with a short CVD session.

Can OBV and CVD be used together?+

Yes, when OBV describes broad volume participation and CVD examines recent aggressor behavior. They are not independent if both are driven by the same venue and period, and disagreement should prompt a data and price-response check rather than an automatic trade.
