Doji candlestick: what it means and why it needs context
What makes a bar a doji, why the pattern by itself says nothing about direction, and how location turns it into a real signal on a free live crypto chart.
Doji is free on Basis — the button opens a live crypto chart with it already applied. No account, no trial and no limit on how many indicators you add.
Open the chartWhat it measures
A doji forms when a bar’s open and close land at almost the same price, leaving a body too small to read against its range. It measures indecision within one bar: neither buyers nor sellers held control by the close.
The wicks are not part of the definition. A doji can have long wicks on both sides, a long wick on one side, or almost none — what makes it a doji is the body, not the shadow.
How it is calculated
These are the steps Basis performs, verified against the published definition.
- 1
Compare the absolute distance between open and close against the bar’s total high-low range.
- 2
If that body is below a small threshold — commonly under about 5–10% of the range — the bar qualifies as a doji.
- 3
The exact threshold is an implementation choice; different libraries draw the line in slightly different places, which is why the same chart can show a doji on one platform and a very small candle on another.
How to read it
- A doji after a strong, one-directional run is the more useful case: it says the side that was in control just failed to make further progress on the bar.
- A doji in the middle of a range is close to noise — ranges are built from indecisive bars, so the pattern is not informative there.
- It is a warning to watch the next bar, not a signal to act on its own. A doji with no follow-through the next bar is usually just a doji.
- Where it sits relative to recent structure matters more than the bar itself: at a prior high or low it is worth attention; in open air it usually is not.
Where it misleads
The single most common mistake is trading the doji itself instead of waiting for what comes after it. A doji only becomes informative once the next bar either confirms the stall (reversal) or overrides it (continuation) — read alone, it is a description of one bar’s indecision, not a forecast.
