What it measures

Three white soldiers is three consecutive up bars, each opening within the prior bar’s body and closing at a new high with a small upper wick.

It measures sustained, uninterrupted buying across three full bars rather than a single strong move.

How it is calculated

These are the steps Basis performs, verified against the published definition.

  1. 1

Each of three consecutive bars closes higher than the one before.

  2. 2

Each bar opens within the real body of the previous bar, not with a large gap up.

  3. 3

Each bar closes near its own high, leaving a small upper wick — large wicks indicate rejection within the bar and weaken the pattern.

How to read it

  • The pattern reads strongest as a continuation confirmation after a base or a shallow pullback, not as a signal to chase after an already-extended run.
  • Three increasingly large bodies with shrinking wicks describe accelerating conviction; three similar-sized bodies describe steady, less explosive buying.
  • Where the three bars sit relative to recent structure matters as much as their shape — three soldiers climbing out of a base reads very differently from three soldiers printed after a run that has already gone a long way.
  • A fourth bar that keeps closing higher extends the case; one that immediately reverses converts what looked like acceleration into the exhaustion case the pattern cannot rule out on its own.

Where it misleads

Three strong bars in a row can just as easily be the last leg of a move before exhaustion as the start of a new one — the pattern does not distinguish the two, and needs volume or a location read to tell them apart. Buying the third soldier automatically, on the assumption that three up bars must mean more are coming, ignores that exhaustion runs frequently look identical to genuine breakouts until the fourth bar fails to follow through.
