Add one URL to ChatGPT as a custom MCP server and it reads the market through Basis: live candles from Binance, Bybit, OKX and Hyperliquid, aggressor-tagged order flow, funding and open interest, public whale positions, 200 indicators and backtests — then hands you a real chart. No account and no API key on our side.
On its own, ChatGPT answers from what it learned in training and from whatever pages its web search turns up. A price quoted from a news page is minutes or hours old, and nothing on that page says who is buying, where the leverage sits or what funding costs right now.
So the answer to "should I worry about this move?" is a well-written guess. A screenshot does not fix it: the model reads pixels, not the candles behind them, and a misread axis becomes a confident wrong number.
Connected to Basis, ChatGPT stops guessing and starts checking. Every number in its answer comes from a tool call made a moment earlier, and the chart it builds shows you the same thing it saw.
Connect it
One server URL for every assistant. There is nothing to sign up for and no key to paste.
https://www.basischarts.com/api/mcp
ChatGPT
Plugins → the plus button → Add custom MCP server. Paste the URL, accept the notice and press Create as a plugin. Then switch Basis on in a new chat.
ChatGPT asks you to confirm before a tool that changes something runs, and building a chart counts as one. Available on plans that allow custom MCP servers.
Claude
Customize → Connectors → + Add → Add custom connector. Name it Basis, paste the URL, then Continue and Add.
Works on every Claude plan, including Free (one custom connector). There is nothing to authorise: the connector has no login step because Basis does not ask for one.
Claude Code
Run this once in any project. It is saved for every session afterwards.
claude mcp add --transport http basis https://www.basischarts.com/api/mcp
Cursor
Add to ~/.cursor/mcp.json, or .cursor/mcp.json inside one project.
Candles from one second to one month on Binance, Bybit, OKX and Hyperliquid, spot and perpetual. Funding, open interest, long/short positioning and liquidations.
See who is pushing price
Order flow from the exchange's own aggressor flag: buy and sell volume at each price, delta and absorption — the part a price chart hides.
Check what strong accounts hold
A research-screened group of public Hyperliquid accounts: which side they lean, how many agree, where the largest entered and how far they sit from liquidation.
Test an idea before you risk it
Backtests on exchange history with fees and no lookahead, and market-wide screens that turn "find me setups like this" into a list.
Get a chart, not a paragraph
It builds a real chart — indicators, levels, Fibonacci, a position box — looks at it to check its work, and sends you a link that opens it in Basis.
Be told when it happens
Ask for an alert and it prepares the exact rule. You open the link, read what it watches and set it. Nothing is armed until you do; alerts that keep running with the tab closed need a free Basis account.
Prompts to start with
Each one asks the assistant to check something specific, and says what it will look at — so you can tell a measured answer from a fluent one.
Read the market
What is BTC doing on the 4h right now? Check the trend, RSI and the nearest levels, then give me the chart.
Checks: Live 4h candles, computed indicators and a chart link.
Check the leverage
Is ETH funding unusually high against its own recent history, and what is open interest doing?
Checks: Funding and open-interest history from the venue, compared with their own ranges.
See who is in control
Over the last hour, are aggressive buyers or sellers in control of SOL? Show me the delta.
Checks: Aggressor-tagged trades for the window, summed into delta and volume at price.
Follow the big money
Which way are the screened Hyperliquid whales leaning on BTC right now, how many agree, and how far are the biggest positions from liquidation?
Checks: Current public positions of a research-screened whale group: side, agreement, entries, leverage, distance to liquidation.
Test it first
Backtest buying BTC on the 4h when RSI(14) falls to 30 and selling when it recovers to 50, long only, with fees. Tell me the drawdown and the number of trades, not just the return.
Checks: The built-in RSI strategy on exchange candles, closed bars only, with costs.
Which ChatGPT plans can do this
ChatGPT adds a custom MCP server on plans that allow one; free ChatGPT accounts currently cannot. If you do not see Add custom MCP server under Plugins, your plan does not offer it yet.
ChatGPT asks you to confirm before a tool that changes something runs, and building a chart counts as one.
No ChatGPT plan with custom servers? Claude accepts the same Basis URL as a custom connector on every plan, including Free.
What it will not do
It does not predict prices. It reports what the market is doing and what the numbers say about it; the decision stays yours.
It does not place trades or touch an exchange account. Basis reads public market data and builds charts — there are no keys to give it.
It cannot see your Basis journal, saved alerts or workspace. It can prepare a new alert for you to set, nothing more.
A model reading good data is still a model. Ask it to show what it checked, and treat an answer with no checks behind it as an opinion.
Questions
Is it free?+
The Basis MCP server is free, with no account and no API key. ChatGPT itself needs a plan that allows custom MCP servers. An optional paid Basis Founders membership adds deeper tools — the whale and gamma levels map, Whale Intelligence, Technical Read and a derivatives history archive — through a personal link.
Which ChatGPT plan do I need?+
One that offers custom MCP servers: open Plugins, press the plus button and look for Add custom MCP server. Free ChatGPT accounts do not currently have it. Claude supports the same server on every plan, Free included.
Is the data really live?+
Each tool call fetches from the venue at that moment — the latest candles, the current funding and open interest, the most recent trades. It is live per question rather than a ticker streaming inside the chat; the chart link opens a streaming view.
Can ChatGPT trade for me with this?+
No. Basis holds no exchange keys and places no orders. It reads public market data, computes, and builds charts and alert links you choose whether to use.
Will it make ChatGPT good at predicting crypto?+
No tool makes price prediction reliable. What changes is that the analysis rests on numbers checked a moment ago instead of memory, and that a rule can be tested on history before you trust it.
What does Basis see of my conversation?+
Only the tool calls ChatGPT makes, such as "BTCUSDT, 4h candles". Not your chat, not your ChatGPT account, and there is no Basis sign-in.
Does it work with Claude, Cursor or other assistants?+
Yes. The same URL works in Claude, Claude Code, Cursor and any client that speaks remote (Streamable HTTP) MCP.
Ask your first question on live data
Paste the URL into your assistant, then ask it what the market is doing — and to show you what it checked.
Setup steps are as OpenAI and Anthropic document them in October 2026; menus change. Basis reports what venues publish and what the maths says about it. Nothing here is financial advice.
