What taker flow actually measures

Taker flow classifies trades by which side crossed the spread. A taker buyer lifts an offer; a taker seller hits a bid. The buy-sell ratio compares those aggressive volumes over a window.

A value above one means more taker-buy volume than taker-sell volume in that sample. It does not guarantee price should rise because passive limit orders can absorb aggressive buyers without moving.

That interaction between flow and response is the useful signal. Strong buying with no upward progress can reveal absorption; modest positive flow with rapid progress can reveal thin offers.

Core relationship

Taker buy/sell ratio = aggressive buy volume ÷ aggressive sell volume

The data contract

Before comparing two values, make sure they answer the same question.

  • Aggressor classification comes from exchange trade data and is specific to that venue.
  • Window length changes the question: one minute describes execution pressure, one day describes a broad flow regime.
  • CVD accumulates the difference between aggressive buying and selling; the ratio describes balance within a window.
  • Missing sell volume can make the ratio unstable, so raw buy and sell notionals should remain visible.

Read it in combinations

Observed togetherPlausible interpretationWhat would contradict it
Ratio above 1 · price advances · OI steady/upAggressive demand receives price progress and may include new positioning. The move reaches resistance and progress stops despite continued buying.
Ratio above 1 · price flat/downPassive sellers absorb aggressive buyers.Absorption exhausts, offers thin and price begins accepting higher.
Ratio below 1 · price holds supportPassive buyers absorb aggressive selling.Support loses acceptance and OI expands with the decline.
Ratio spikes after liquidation · OI fallsForced closure rather than voluntary conviction dominates the print.Fresh spot volume and OI rebuild after the liquidation phase.

A reproducible workflow

  1. 01

    Choose a structural location

Flow is most informative at a level where one side should produce progress, not in the middle of random noise.

  2. 02

    Read raw volume and ratio

A ratio of 2 on tiny volume is not the same event as 1.2 on exceptional participation.

  3. 03

    Judge price response

Ask how far price moved for the aggression spent. Failure to progress is often more informative than the ratio direction.

  4. 04

    Check persistence

One burst can be liquidation or a large execution. Sustained flow across several bars is a different regime.

Common interpretation errors

  • Buying every ratio reading above one without checking location or price response.
  • Ignoring absolute volume and using only the normalized ratio.
  • Treating venue-specific aggressor flow as complete market flow.
  • Confusing a forced liquidation print with voluntary directional conviction.

Questions

What does a taker buy-sell ratio above 1 mean?+

More aggressive buy volume than sell volume traded in the selected window. Whether that is bullish depends on price response, location, total volume and derivatives context.

How is taker flow different from CVD?+

The ratio compares buy and sell aggression in one window. CVD accumulates their difference through time, making divergence and trend easier to see but adding start-point dependence.

Can aggressive buying make price fall?+

Yes. A sufficiently large passive seller can absorb market buys. High buy aggression with no progress can reveal supply rather than strength.
