Why this is usually paid for

Derivatives context is usually sold as a data product rather than bundled into a chart. Sites that aggregate funding and open interest tend to gate history, resolution or the ability to see more than one venue.

Basis reads it from the exchanges’ own public endpoints, which are free, and displays it next to the chart it belongs to. There is nothing to resell.

The value is not in the numbers being rare — anyone can fetch them — but in them sitting beside the price they explain, on the same clock. Funding on one screen and price on another is two facts; funding under the candle that produced it is a reading.

How to use it

  1. 1

Read price and open interest together

Price up with open interest up is new money entering long. Price up with open interest down is shorts closing — a squeeze, which ends when the shorts run out. Those two look identical on a candle chart.

  2. 2

Use funding as a positioning read

Persistently positive funding means longs are paying to stay long, which is a crowded side. It is not a timing signal on its own; it is a statement about who is exposed.

  3. 3

    Watch liquidations for the flush

A cluster of liquidations at a level is forced selling, not chosen selling. Those moves overshoot and frequently retrace, which is a different thing from a move driven by decisions.

  4. 4

    Check the venue

Funding and open interest are per-exchange. A crowded position on one venue is not necessarily crowded everywhere, and the panel is tagged with which venue it is reading.

Questions

Is derivatives data really free here?+

Yes. It comes from the exchanges’ public market-data endpoints, which do not require an account or an API key, and Basis displays it without adding a subscription of its own.

Do I need exchange API keys?+

No. Everything shown is public market data published by the exchanges themselves, which requires no key and no account. Basis does not connect to your exchange account, cannot see your positions, cannot move funds and cannot place orders — it is an analysis terminal, not a trading client.

Which venues are covered?+

Coverage differs by venue because the exchanges publish different things. The panel is tagged with the venue it is reading, and the exchange picker shows how many of the derivative panes each one can fill before you switch.

How current is it?+

Funding, open interest and positioning refresh on a schedule; the liquidation feed is a live session stream. The panel labels which is which so a static number is never mistaken for a live one.
