An AI that works the chart, not one that describes it.
The AI assistant is free on Basis: it fetches candles, computes indicators and reads order flow with real tools, then puts what it used on your chart. There is no subscription and no resold inference — it runs on an API key you supply, so you pay your model provider directly and only for what you ask.
What you get

Why this is usually paid for
Most "AI trading" products resell inference: you pay a monthly fee, they call a model, and the margin is the product. That model also usually has no market data — it answers from training, which is why it can state a price that is months stale with complete confidence.
Bringing your own key removes the margin and the middleman, and giving the model real tools removes the guessing. The cost of a question becomes what the provider charges for it, which for a chart question is usually a fraction of a cent.
How to use it

Get a key from a provider
Any of the supported providers will issue one in a couple of minutes. A key made in the provider’s default workspace works immediately; keys scoped to a named workspace need that workspace id, and there is a field for it beside the key.

Ask about the chart in front of you
The assistant is given the symbol, timeframe and the indicators already loaded, so "is this oversold" resolves against what you are looking at. You do not have to restate the instrument.

Read what it called, not only what it said
Every tool call is listed above the answer. If it claims an RSI reading, the indicator_compute call that produced it is there to check. An answer with no tool calls behind it is a language model talking, and should be treated that way.

Watch for it saying no
A useful answer includes "the condition is not met". The assistant is instructed to report what it measured rather than manufacture a signal, so a flat verdict on a quiet chart is the system working, not failing.
Questions
Is the AI assistant free?+
Basis charges nothing for it and there is no paid tier. It does need an API key from a model provider, and that provider bills you for what you use — typically a fraction of a cent for a chart question. There is no free inference here and no trial credit; that is the trade for not being charged a subscription.
Does it need an account?+
The assistant does, because it writes to your journal and your sheets and needs somewhere to write. Charts, indicators, order flow and derivatives all work with no account at all.
Where does my API key go?+
Into your browser’s storage, and from there straight to the provider you chose. It is never sent to a Basis server, so it cannot be logged or leaked by us. Clearing site data removes it.
Can it place trades?+
No. There is no brokerage connection, no order routing and no custody anywhere in Basis. It can analyse a market and change what is on your chart; it cannot buy anything.
Which model should I use?+
A frontier model from Anthropic, OpenAI or Google handles multi-step analysis most reliably. Smaller open models are much faster and cheaper and are fine for a single lookup, but they are weaker at chaining several tool calls into one answer. The picker says which is which.
Will it tell me what to buy?+
No, and it is instructed not to. It reports what the data says, including when the data says nothing much. Anything that produced confident entries and targets on demand would be a signal service with a language model in front of it.
