Open interest charts, free.

Crypto open interest data is free on Basis and displayed beside the market it describes. You can compare OI with price, funding and positioning without an API key, exchange account, trial or separate derivatives subscription.

What you get

  • Current open interest and historical observations aligned to the selected perpetual market
  • Price and open-interest regime interpretation instead of presenting the OI number without context
  • Funding rate beside OI so leverage size and leverage cost are not mistaken for the same signal
  • Global and top-trader positioning for a separate view of how accounts are distributed
  • Taker buy and sell flow for checking whether aggressive execution agrees with exposure growth
  • Venue and freshness labels that identify where the value came from and whether it is current

Why this is usually paid for

Open interest is commonly monetized as specialist derivatives data. Free views may expose only the latest value, shorten history or separate OI from the chart, while paid products sell longer retention, cross-venue aggregation and alerts around changes.

Basis includes venue-native OI in the derivatives panel because a perpetual candle cannot explain whether a move came from new positions or positions closing. The value is highest beside price and funding, not as an isolated dashboard, so it belongs inside the charting workflow rather than behind a separate data plan.

Open interest is not a directional vote. It counts outstanding exposure without identifying which side is correct, and every contract has both a long and a short. The direction comes from the combination of price response, OI change, funding, taker flow and market structure.

How to use it

  1. 1

Match the exact market and venue

Select the perpetual contract you intend to study and confirm the derivatives panel names the same exchange. Open interest on one venue is not the total exposure across every venue, so comparisons must keep coverage consistent.

  2. 2

    Classify price and OI together

Price rising with OI rising suggests new exposure entering the move. Price rising while OI falls is more consistent with shorts closing. The candle direction is identical, but the fuel and likely persistence are different.

  3. 3

    Add funding and aggressive flow

Rising OI with expensive positive funding can describe crowded long leverage; rising OI with neutral funding and sustained taker buying is a different regime. Use the additional fields to narrow the explanation rather than count each as an independent vote.

  4. 4

Watch what happens after a flush

A sharp OI decline shows leverage leaving. The next question is whether OI rebuilds while price accepts the new range or remains lower as price reclaims the move. Deleveraging alone does not guarantee either reversal or continuation.

Questions

What does rising open interest mean in crypto?+

Rising open interest means more outstanding derivatives exposure exists, not that buyers necessarily outnumber sellers. When price and OI rise together, new leverage is participating in the advance; when price falls and OI rises, new exposure is participating in the decline. Funding and flow help interpret which positioning is crowded.

Why does open interest differ between websites?+

Websites may cover different exchanges, contract types, quote currencies, update times and notional conversions. A venue-specific number should not match an aggregated market total. Basis labels the exchange and market so the value can be compared with the correct price series rather than with an undefined aggregate.

Is a drop in open interest bullish or bearish?+

A drop in open interest means exposure was closed or liquidated. Its directional meaning depends on price and subsequent acceptance: falling price with falling OI often describes long reduction, while rising price with falling OI often describes short covering. Neither combination alone guarantees the next move.

Do I need an exchange API key to see open interest?+

No. Basis reads public derivatives endpoints for open interest, funding and related market context. You do not need to connect an exchange account or provide trading credentials, and the chart does not receive permission to place orders or access private balances.
