Line break, free.

Line break charts are free on Basis with no account. Choose how many lines a reversal must clear, and the chart filters out everything that does not.

What you get

  • Line break blocks built from live crypto candles, with a configurable number of lines
  • A reversal drawn only when price exceeds the extreme of the last N blocks
  • Three lines by default, which is the classic setting, adjustable up or down
  • Spot and perpetual futures across the supported venues
  • Indicators and drawings work on it like any other chart type

Why this is usually paid for

Line break belongs to the same family as Renko, Kagi and point-and-figure: chart types that discard time to make structure obvious. They are cheap to compute and are usually gated behind a plan for the same reason Kagi is — they mark the boundary of a feature list.

Basis draws all of them from candles it has already loaded, so none of them costs anything to offer.

How to use it

  1. 1

Open the chart on line break

The button below switches to the line break renderer. The default is three lines, which is what most descriptions of the technique assume.

  2. 2

    Pick the line count deliberately

The count is how many prior blocks a move must clear to reverse the chart. Two lines reverses readily and keeps more of the noise; five lines only turns on a substantial move. Three is the usual compromise.

  3. 3

Treat a reversal as a change of regime, not a signal

A block in the opposite colour means price has cleared several blocks worth of the previous direction. That is a statement about what has already happened; it is late by construction, and that lateness is the filter you asked for.

  4. 4

Confirm on a time chart before acting

Because time is removed, a run of blocks can be minutes or weeks. Switch back to candles to see the pace, and to order flow to see whether the move was bought or sold into.

Questions

Is the line break chart free?+

Yes. Line break charts on Basis need no account and no trial period, because there is no paid tier for a chart type to sit behind. Open the terminal, switch the chart type to line break and set how many lines a reversal has to clear.

What does "three line break" mean exactly?+

A new block continues the current direction whenever price makes a new extreme. To draw a block in the opposite direction, price has to exceed the extreme of the last three blocks. Change the three and you change how much evidence a reversal needs.

How is it different from Renko?+

Renko blocks are all the same size and appear whenever price travels that distance. Line break blocks vary in size — each spans from the last extreme to the new one — and appear on new extremes rather than on fixed distance. Line break adapts to volatility; Renko normalises it.

Does the chart repaint?+

The block being formed changes as price moves within the current period, which is true of the last candle on any chart. Completed blocks do not change.

Which timeframe should I build it from?+

A line break chart is built from an underlying timeframe, so that choice still matters: the same instrument on 5-minute and on daily candles produces very different blocks. Pick the timeframe you would have analysed anyway.
