Order flow on Linux and Chromebook. Free.
Yes. Basis runs a real crypto footprint chart for free on Linux and on Chromebooks, inside Chrome, Firefox or Chromium, with no Wine, no virtual machine, no account and no trial, building bid and ask volume, delta and imbalances from Binance’s live trades.
What you get
- The full Volume footprint in the browser: Bid × Ask, Delta, Volume and Dominance views on Binance spot pairs and USD-M perpetuals
- Delta, bar POC and value area, stacked imbalances and delta divergence, with row grouping you can widen on a modest machine
- The Order Flow workspace: a live liquidity heatmap, depth of market and Time & Sales for the same contract
- Any distribution and ChromeOS alike, because nothing is installed or compiled: a current Chrome, Chromium or Firefox is enough
- A relay that keeps the order book and the tape moving when your network cannot reach Binance’s live streams
- Bar-by-bar replay of past sessions, and price alerts that run while the tab is open
Why this is usually paid for
Much of the classic order-flow software was written for Windows. On Linux that usually means Wine, a virtual machine or a second computer, and a Chromebook cannot run Windows desktop programs at all. The data itself is not the obstacle: crypto exchanges publish every trade with the side that crossed the spread.
Basis is a web application that builds the footprint in the browser from Binance’s trade stream, so there is nothing to port, package or emulate. The same chart that runs on Windows or a Mac runs in Chrome on a Chromebook and in Firefox on a Linux desktop.
How to use it
- 1
Open the footprint in Chrome or Firefox
The button below opens Binance BTCUSDT on a five-minute Volume footprint. On a Chromebook, Chrome’s menu can install the page as an app, which gives Basis its own window and a place on the shelf next to your other apps.
- 2
Tune it for the machine you have
An entry-level Chromebook does the same work a desktop does, just more slowly. Widen the row grouping and show fewer bars at once, and the footprint stays smooth without losing the levels that matter.
- 3
Add the heatmap and the tape
Press Order Flow at the top of the terminal for the liquidity heatmap, depth of market and Time & Sales on the same market. It records the order book from the moment it opens, so give it a minute before reading anything into it.
- 4
Keep the tab in view
Browsers slow down hidden tabs to save energy, which can pause the live tape during a long session. Keep Basis visible in its own window; when a paused tab comes back into view, it reconnects and repairs the missing trades.
Questions
Is the footprint chart really free on Linux and Chromebook?+
Yes. The footprint, the liquidity heatmap, depth of market and Time & Sales are free on Linux and ChromeOS exactly as on Windows or a Mac: no account, no trial, no card and nothing to install. Open the link and the chart builds from Binance’s live trades.
Do I need Wine or a Windows virtual machine?+
No. Basis is not a Windows program, so there is nothing to run through Wine, Proton or a virtual machine. It runs natively in Chrome, Chromium and Firefox on Linux and in Chrome on ChromeOS, and your workspace is saved in the browser between sessions.
Will it run on an entry-level Chromebook?+
Yes, with sensible settings. The footprint is computed in the browser, so a slower processor takes longer to draw dense bars. A wider row grouping, fewer visible bars and a five-minute or fifteen-minute interval keep an inexpensive Chromebook responsive.
Is there an Android app I should use on a Chromebook instead?+
No, and you do not need one. The browser version is the full application, with the same footprint, heatmap and tape as on a desktop. Installing the page as an app from Chrome’s menu gives it its own window, which is the closest thing to an app there is.
Which browsers are supported on Linux?+
Current versions of Chrome, Chromium, Firefox and other Chromium-based browsers such as Brave or Edge. Basis needs nothing beyond a modern browser and a network connection that can reach market data, and it switches to a relay when Binance’s streams are blocked.
