Test a strategy without learning Pine Script.

Yes, there is a free way to test your own crypto strategy without writing Pine Script. TradingView’s custom strategies are written in code, while the Strategy Builder on Basis lets you connect blocks instead and backtests them on live market data as you go, with no account.

What you get

  • 188 blocks instead of a script: indicators, comparisons, logic and every Formula Lab function, connected with wires
  • Rules TradingView’s price data cannot see: taker buy and sell volume, delta, funding and open interest as ordinary blocks
  • One press to run the same rules across up to 100 coins, with a table per coin and a verdict on whether the idea travels
  • Read every block at any bar on the chart, which answers "why did it not enter here?" without adding print statements
  • BTC or a higher timeframe as a filter, with values reaching your rules only after their bar has closed
  • The generated program is shown under the Formula tab, so nothing is hidden behind the blocks
  • No account, no trial and no card: open the link and a working example is already on the canvas

Why this is usually paid for

Code is a fine way to write a strategy if you already write code. For everyone else, the idea takes a minute and learning a language takes a month, and most ideas are not worth a month. Blocks close that gap: you can find out this afternoon whether an idea survives contact with the data.

You do not have to leave anything. Basis is a research tool, not a replacement for the chart you already use. Test the idea here, then trade it from wherever you normally do.

Checked 2 November 2026: TradingView says any user can create a strategy if they know the Pine Script language, and its documentation describes writing a custom strategy in the Pine Editor. It also offers pre-made strategies from its built-in indicators and Community Scripts. Sources: TradingView: What are strategies, backtesting and forward testing, TradingView: Pine Script strategies. How to use it

  1. 1

    Translate the idea into events

Most Pine strategies come down to crossovers and conditions. A Cross Over block is ta.crossover, Greater Than and AND are the comparison and logic operators, and a Parameter block is an input you can sweep.

  2. 2

    Check the fills are comparable

Signals here are worked out on closed bars and filled at the next open, with fees and slippage applied by default. Set the same costs under Risk & Costs before comparing a result with one from elsewhere.

  3. 3

Read the checks, not just the curve

Each test says whether one trade made the result, whether it held up in the last 30% of the window, and whether doubled costs erase it.

  4. 4

    Run it across markets

Testing the same rules on many coins by hand means switching symbols one at a time. The Markets tab does it in one press and shows where the idea worked and where it did not.

Questions

Can I import my Pine Script strategy?+

No. Pine Script does not import, and blocks do not export to Pine. The logic usually translates quickly by hand, because the common pieces, such as crossovers, moving averages and comparisons, exist as blocks with the same meaning.

Do I need a TradingView account?+

No. Basis is independent of TradingView and needs no account of any kind to build and test. A free Basis account only keeps your strategies across devices.

Which markets does it test?+

The builder tests crypto markets on Binance, Bybit, OKX and Hyperliquid, spot and perpetuals where the venue has them, all free. Stock and commodity markets need Founders membership.

Will my results match a TradingView backtest?+

Not exactly, and no two backtesters do. Fill assumptions, fees and the bars each one loads all differ. Treat a large difference as a reason to look at which assumption caused it.

Open it and see

The builder opens with a working strategy on the canvas and its results showing. Change anything and it tests again. Nothing to sign up for.
